About Dr Nick Perry

Dr. Nick Perry qualified at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1975. Following Specialist training in Breast Surgery he obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1980. Further Specialist training in Radiology and Breast Imaging lead to Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 1984. Then choosing to super-specialise in Breast Screening and Diagnosis he undertook periods of training secondment at National Training Centres in the UK ( Guildford and Nottingham), and Europe ( Malmo, Florence and Nijmegen). Appointed as Consultant Radiologist to the teaching Staff at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1988, he became Director of the Central and East London Breast Screening Programme in 1993- a post he still holds.


As Director of Breast Screening Quality Assurance for the London Region, he chaired the National Co-ordinating Group for QA Directors and also chaired the National Co-ordinating Group for Breast Screening Equipment. He has recently participated in the National Digital Mammography Steering Group-along with no less than three colleagues from the Princess Grace Breast Unit, and sits on the National Co-ordinating Radiologists Group.


Internationally he has been Chairman of Detection and Diagnosis for the European Society of Mastology ( EUSOMA) and sits on their Executive Committee. He is Chairman of the European Reference Organisation for Quality Assured Breast Screening and Diagnostic Services (EUREF), an organisation which has been recently invited to Quality Assure the German National Screening Programme Reference Centres. He has been Consultant to the European Commission for its Europe against Cancer Breast Screening Project, helping several Member States set up their National Breast Screening programmes. Dr. Perry acts as Advisor to the European Cancer Network, and also contributes to and is Editor-in-Chief of the European Commission publication- European Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Breast Screening and Diagnosis, now in its 4th Edition ( 2006).


Fulfilling numerous teaching and lecture commitments at home and abroad, he had the honour to be an invited speaker to the Radiological Society of North America, and also in 2005 was invited to give evidence to the US Senate sub-Committee organised Washington hearings to re-draft the US Mammography Quality Standards Act. In 2006 he presented plans for a system of European Accreditation of Breast Units to a European Parliamentary Working Group in Brussels.


Dr. Perry has been lead Radiologist and Director of the Princess Grace Breast Unit since 2000.
